Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge: W

Wahine

This is the mast of the TEV Wahine.  On 10 April 1968 it ran aground on Barrett Reef and capsized and sank in the shallow waters  at the mouth of Wellington Harbour.  Of the 734 people on board, 53 died from drowning, exposure to the elements or from injuries sustained in the hurried evacuation and abandonment of the stricken vessel.

In contrast to the weather on that day (technically the tail end of Tropical Cyclone Giselle but commonly known as the Wahine Storm) today was a beautiful, sunny, calm day.
