How I see the world

Weekly Photo Challenge: Endurance

My Great-Aunt Esma – 100 years old today.

The cards on the table are from the Queen, the Prime Minister and the Governor-General

I’ve been reflecting on the fact that she was born at the start of the first world war – and thinking of everything she must have seen in her life

Cee’s Oddball Challenge: Week 30

Last week was both the final week of the election campaign and the 121st anniversary of women getting the vote in New Zealand.

At several of the intersections in central wellington the “cross now” signal was changed from the traditional green man to a silhouette of Kate Sheppard – New Zealand’s most prominent suffragette.

In this shot the building in the background is Parliament.

A word a week photograph challenge: hole

Knowing that maritime history is replete with special terms I thought that the hole an anchor chain comes out of must have a particular name – and it turns out there is.  This is the hawse of the Hikitia. The Hikitia is a working self-propelled floating steam crane in Wellington. She is thought to be the only working steam crane of her type in the world.
